A wedding is a special day. The couple is surrounded by loved ones and celebrating their union in a state of bliss. At that moment, it seems like their marriage will last forever. Sadly, the reality doesn’t always pan out the way everyone hopes. Many marriages fail for a variety of reasons and end up in legal separation or divorce. According to Alabama Code, a divorce may be granted for twelve causes, including the following five:
1) Adultery
If one partner has an affair, the other partner can be granted a separation or divorce. While some couples work through this situation, many people can’t move past their spouse cheating on them. You aren’t required to feel obligated to “move on” if your spouse is unfaithful; adultery is a very serious issue and you have the right to a divorce.
2) Abandonment
If a partner leaves the other for a year, the other can file for divorce. It’s important to note that the filing spouse must be able to prove their partner has abandoned them for an entire year prior to the filing.
3) Addiction
Sometimes a spouse develops addictive habits after getting married. This includes habitual drunkenness or use of hard drugs like cocaine, heroin, and others. Some situations can be resolved through treatment, but for the people whose partner refuses to quit substance abuse, a divorce is an option.
4) Unknown or Uncommunicated Pregnancy
If a wife concealed her pregnancy or keeps it a secret from her husband at the time of marriage, the husband has a right to a divorce.
5) Prison Time
If a spouse is found guilty of a crime with a prison sentence of seven years or more, the other spouse may file for divorce after their partner has served two years of prison time.
